2012 TOURNAMENT COVERAGE DEDICATED TO JOHN WEATHERBEE

John Weatherbee In The M.A. Section At The Bangor Auditorium During The 2006 Eastern Maine Tournament. - LEE RAND PHOTO

Over the years the late John  Weatherbee was the epitome of good sportsmanship and youth mentoring in the Lincoln area. His dedication to the youth of Lincoln and his love of basketball is well known. Many of the adults who now live in our area are better people because of the influence of John Weatherbee.

It is with that in mind, that Connie and I dedicate our 7th consecutive year of coverage of the Eastern Maine high school basketball tournament in Bangor to the late John Weatherbee.

We hope our photographs of the games will in some small way add to the enjoyment and excitement that John found so meaningful and purposeful in his dealings with our youngsters during his lifetime. His influence is felt and will be felt by many long after the final buzzer . . .

Lynx advance to 12-5; defeat Stearns 65-56

MAs Timmy Cummings makes a drive towards the basket late in tonight's win over Stearns. LEE RAND PHOTO

February 2 - The Lynx hit for two right off to start the game off with Stearns tonight at the M.A. gym before a fairly large crowd. At the end of the period the Lynx had a nice 10-point lead, 23-13. It seemed like this game was going to mirror their last meeting just before Christmas when Mattanawcook won easily by 24 points in Millinocket. Alas, it was not to be that easy this time!

By half time the Minutemen had crept to within 2 points, 36-34, after tying the Lynx at 31 each with 1minute, 8 seconds to go. That margin stayed the same throughout the next period, with the score 51-49 Lynx with one period to go. And, what a 4th period it was! The score tied a a couple times in the 4th as the two teams battled pretty evenly until finally, in the last two minutes, M.A. stretched their lead ever so slowly to pull out a hard fought win, 65-56. Chaise Vicaire was Lynx high scorer with 25 points on the night. Nick L’Italien had 13 points and Tim Cummings added 11 for the boys from Lincoln. The M.A. JVs won tonight, 64-41.

The boys have one more regular season game next Monday, at home, against Schenck. After that, it looks like a trip to Bangor, for the first time since Coach Libby took over from Rick Sinclair. WelcomeToLincolnMaine.com will be there for our 7th tournament in row to bring you colorful action photos of all the excitement and games our local teams are involved in! See you there?

The Lady Lynx have three regular season games left - two at home, the next being tomorrow night against Penquis. For our photos of tonight's game just CLICK HERE. And many photos are also posted on Lincoln's most "liked" Facebook page, Welcome To Lincoln, Maine", too.

Matt Mulligan helps MA Athletic Boosters

- Lee Rand Photo

Howland native, PVHS graduate and New York Jets football player Matt Mulligan has donated an autographed Jets jersey (pictured above) to the Mattanawcook Academy Boosters Club. The Jets Jersey is being raffled off by the club. Tickets are available from any Athletic Booster member as well as at Lynx home basketball games. The winner will be chosen at the last M.A. home basketball game on February 7th. Now, do your part to support our boosters!

And now for something a little different . . .

January 29 - Yes, we know it's basketball season, but today we have another sport to mention. Those of you who live here know we have more than the usual four seasons common to temperate climates everywhere. We do have spring, summer, fall and winter, of course. Around here, we also enjoy (or not, as the case may be) mud season, blackfly season, hunting season, open-water fishing season, baseball/softball season and so forth and so on. Right now, besides being winter, it's ice fishing season!

As you might imagine, since Lincoln has at least 13 lakes/ponds within its borders, people do like to fish. We have bass, pickerel, white perch, yellow perch, togue, etc. We also have Salvelinus fontinalis, the brook trout, which is the finest delicacy ever to grace a fying pan and is much sought-after as a game fish.

Two fine specimens of Salvelinus fontinalis

Now that the waters of the Lincoln area are covered with ice, people have been getting themselves out into the fresh air with their fishing gear and having a mighty fine time catching fish. On this beautiful winter day, this writer ventured out to see if the fishermen were having any success.

The young fisherman above, by the way, isn't trying to avoid being identified - he's just keeping warm. It may be a nice day, but there's a little wind out there. As a disclaimer, all the fishermen you see here are legal. If any of you want to do some fishing, you do need a license depending on your age, and there are restrictions on the sizes and number of fish you can keep on some waters.

The lucky anglers you see above are Griffin Clifford, Devin Lujan, Braden Lujan and Dalton LaGasse. The largest trout here is Griffin's 16 1/2" fish, but all of the fish are beauties! Braden and Devin were enjoying their very first ice-fishing trip, and were thrilled to catch some nice trout. Anyone who has ever heard a "fish story" knows that fishermen don't like to divulge their favorite fishing holes. They said to call this an undisclosed location or "behind a big rock", so that's all you're getting from us.

If you're inclined to enjoy some winter fishing, go for it! If you catch some big fish, feel free to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we'll post it here to make all your buddies jealous!

Not tonight!! MA Lady Lynx lose to Stearns 48-40

Mikaila Bisson hits for one of her 4 three pointers tonight against Stearns.  -  LEE RAND PHOTO

January 26 - It didn't seem like the same team that beat Orono the other night. After a low-scoring first period that saw the Lynx and Stearns tied at 4 apiece, the girls from Millinocket slowly built a lead they never gave up. They led by 4 , 18-14, at halftime and outscored M.A. 13-8 to take a 31-22 lead going into the final period of action.

In the end, although M.A. did threaten in the final 8 minutes, it was Stearns 48-40. Mikaila Bisson was high scorer for the Lady Lynx with 12 points - all coming from her 4 3-point shots. Stearns high scorer was Sigrid Koizar with 16 points. The M.A. JV's took a win , 49-17, over Stearns in the evening's opening game.

The girls will be back in Lincoln next Friday, February 3, when they host Penquis. To view our game photos from tonight, just CLICK HERE.

MA girls win a big one!! Defeat Orono 50-41

MA's Mikaila Bisson concentrates before shooting a free throw during tonight's win over #1 ranked Orono - Lee Rand Photo

January 24 - Back in December the Lady Lynx won their first game of the season at Orono by 1 point. Tonight Orono came to Lincoln as the #1 ranked team in Eastern Class C. This time M.A. beat them by 9 points in a game that could have been won by either team until late in the final period.

Taylor Hawkins was top scorer for the Lynx with 12 points. Katie Krapf, Taylor Blood and Harli Maxwell each scored 10 points in a well rounded offense tonight. This was probably the best outing by the girls from Lincoln yet. If they can keep it up Thursday against Stearns, things will be looking good for the 10-3 Lady Lynx. GREAT game ladies!!

M.A.led 9-8 after one period and by 3, 21-18, at the half. They expanded their lead to 6 at 34-28 after three. The Lynx led 49-36 with 1minute 13 seconds to g,. and it was pretty much over. Final score, again, was 50-41!

Let's have a super turnout Thursday night as they take on Stearns. The M.A. JV's lost to Orono 41-36.
